BALACAT FESTIVAL

Mabalacat City, Pampanga


Starting in 2023, the annual festival of Mabalacat City, a Kapampángan city, was renamed from Caragan Festival (named after the city’s Indigenous Aeta founder) to Balacat Festival, after the balacat tree, which gives Mabalacat its name. The Indigenous Aeta Chief Caragan is said to have named the city after the abundance of balacat trees in the area. The word “balakat” is said to be of indigenous Aeta origin.
