Matigsalog means people who live along the river (salog). They are a sub-tribe of the Manobo community.

They are considered warriors who are fearless of their enemies but at the same time are advocators of peace with their neighborhood tribal communities.

Ata means “dwellers in highlands.”

They are a powerful people of unknown origin who appear to be a mixture of Negritos and
Malays, and belong to the largest community of indigenous people, the Manobo.

They were noted to be highly nomadic and tended to live in single-family units.

The name Kagan comes from the word “kag” which means to warn, to advice and to inform.

 

They were the first indigenous tribe in Bawwangin (Dabaw) who embraced Islam, and are
known to have fixed abode.

 

They are very hospitable to visitors.

 

The Kagans are considered as the Davao Muslims.

In 1944, Magdalena Leones ,”Lioness of Filipino Guerrilla” agreed to become a US  special agent to help the Americans defeat the Japanese in the Philippines during  World War II.

She used her connections in the missionary and her ability to speak Niponggo language to pass secret messages and to send medical supplies to different provinces of the  Philippines.

Noong 1944, pumayag siyang maging special agent ng Amerika upang makatulong sa pagpapabagsak ng mga hapon sa Pilipinas.

Ginamit niya ang kanyang mga koneksyon sa misyonaryo at kakayahang magsalita ng  Niponggo upang makapagpasa ng mga lihim na mensahe at makapagpadala ng mga suplay na  medikal sa iba’t ibang probinsya.

Nieves Fernandez was the only woman known to have led guerrilla units against the Japanese during World War II.

Pulangi River Valey and delta which occasionally flood.

 

They are courageous and resourceful people who bravely defend their tribe with
dignity and honor.

Today In History, November 22, 1896, “Huseng Batute” or Jose Corazon de Jesus was born.

He was born in Santa Cruz, Manila.

Jose Corazon de Jesus is a poet.

A poet is a person who creates poetry. Poets may describe themselves as such or be described as such by others. A poet may simply be a writer of poetry, or may perform their art to an audience.

On April 6, 1924, the first Balagtasan took place in Manila, participated by Filipino poets Jose Corazon de Jesus and Florentino Collantes.

He is considered as the King of versified Debate. He held the title until his death in 1932.

He passed away on May 26, 1932.
