Today, November 21 is the 35th death anniversary of Francisca Reyes Aquino, a National Artist for Dance.

She was born on March 9, 1899, and she passed away on November 21, 1983.

Acknowledged as the Folk Dance Pioneer, this Bulakeña began her research on folk dances in the 1920s making trips to remote barrios in Central and Northern Luzon.

Her research on the unrecorded forms of local celebration, ritual, and sport resulted in a 1926 thesis titled “Philippine Folk Dances and Games,” and arranged specifically for use by teachers and playground instructors in public and private schools. NCCA

Francisca Reyes Aquino is acknowledged as the Folk Dance Pioneer. This Bulakeña began her research on folk dances in the 1920s making trips to remote barrios in Central and Northern Luzon. Her research on the unrecorded forms of local celebration, ritual, and sport resulted in a 1926 thesis titled “Philippine Folk Dances and Games,” arranged specifically for use by teachers and playground instructors in public and private schools.

In the 1940s, she served as supervisor of physical education at the Bureau of Education which distributed her work and adapted the teaching of folk dancing as a medium of making young Filipinos aware of their cultural heritage. In 1954, she received the Republic Award of Merit given by the late Pres. Ramon Magsaysay for “outstanding contribution toward the advancement of Filipino culture”, one among the many awards and recognition were given to her.

Santiago Alvarez “Kidlat ng Apoy” is known in Cavite for his bravery after he leads many battles in the province, including the “Battle of Dalahican”, the first great victory of the Filipinos against the Spaniards.

The first Filipino hero is Lapu-Lapu.


Lapu-Lapu was the first Filipino to fight colonization after he and his men blocked Magellan’s fleet in the Battle of Mactan in 1521.


This event consequently, delayed the occupation of the Philippines by Spain for more than 40 years.

 

Siya ang unang Filipino na nilabanan ang kolonisasyon matapos nilang harangin ang armada ni magellan sa battle of mactan noong 1521. Dahil dito, naantala ang pananakop ng mga espanol ng mahigit 40 taon.


According to RA No. 114040, April 27 is a special working holiday nationwide and a special non-working holiday for Lapu-Lapu City in Cebu.


This commemorates the victory of Lapu-Lapu and his men over the Spaniards during the Battle
of Mactan on April 27, 1521.

Remembering Captain Jose Calugas

Captain Jose Calugas is the first Filipino to receive the Medal of Honor from the United States. He is a mess sergeant of a battery (artillery) during world war II.

The action for which the award was made took place near Culis, Bataan Province, Philippine Islands, on 16 January 1942.

A battery gun position was bombed and shelled by the enemy until 1 gun was put out of commission and all the cannoneers were killed or wounded.

Sgt. Calugas, a mess sergeant of another battery, voluntarily and without orders ran 1,000 yards across the shell-swept area to the gun position.

There he organized a volunteer squad that placed the gun back in commission and fired effectively against the enemy, although the position remained under constant and heavy Japanese artillery fire Captain Jose Calugas act of conspicuous deed of personal bravery or self-sacrifice above and beyond the call of duty that distinguishes him from his comrades, he was awarded the United States Medal of Honor.
