Alfredo A. Liongoren
Alfredo A. Liongoren
(15 January 1944 – 19 February 2025)
Born in Guihulngan, Negros Oriental, “Fred” as he is fondly called, spent his childhood and teenage years in Cotabato where his family had moved. He was first introduced to visual arts through illustrations from comics and magazines. This led him to pursue formal art training at the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts where he labored to finish his degree amidst his early successes as an artist.
His recognitions from the Art Association of the Philippines and the Shell National Students Art Competition in the 1960s and 1970s eventually earned him the honor of being part of the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ Thirteen Artists in 1972.
In his long artistic career, Liongoren’s creative expressions ranged in various styles that mostly echoed an array of ideas and moods through the depiction of indigenous elements, natural landscapes, and his critical views on social realities.
Our National Fine Arts Collection is proud to number among its pieces his 1994 opus “Character in Black”, an oil on wood currently on display at the third floor South Wing Hallway Gallery of the National Museum of Fine Arts.
