Paghabol, or “weaving”, is an inclusive industry that promotes gender equality. It does not conform to the bias and traditional concept of weaving as a livelihood exclusive to women. In fact, men have ventured into weaving for higher income sources, and the industry is becoming a husband-and-wife practice in local communities in Bohol.


In line with the annual celebration of PRIDE month, your National Museum Bohol features this traditional hablanan, or loom, from the newly launched Paglawig exhibition. Other objects include “buri” fiber and the saguran, also known as “raffia,” in different hues and patterns. The fashion industry continues to evolve today with the creativity, skill, and boldness of Boholano designers utilizing raffia in fashion as well as in pieces of furniture. Indeed, this community-oriented traditional industry has become a source of pride in Boholano identity.
